Case Study- BridgeWorx

Bridge Worx LOGO - Version 8

Bridge Worx is an innovative software business unit within Horsebridge Network Systems, a Cheltenham-based business providing world-class network and security solutions to more than 120 countries worldwide. Specialising in products to help network operators plan, manage and visualise their infrastructure; Bridge Worx's software allows companies to test and trial planned networks, eliminating problems before they become expensive mistakes.

Bridge Worx came to The Growth Hub with a five-year plan; to take the business from a sales-led to a marketing-led organisation. A reactive sales approach, a small sales team and a lack of marketing knowledge were all hindering this dream – so Bridge Worx needed support if they were to realise their goal of building a successful company.

The main challenge lay in business development, with the aim of making Bridge Worx its own entity. Being a microbusiness within Horsebridge, resource was very limited and funding was an immediate need to help speed the process of growth.

Another resource-related challenge was put under the microscope; that employees were trying to handle several roles each – on top of all the sales and marketing. When examined more closely, The Growth Hub identified skills gaps and training opportunities; to upskill existing staff and prevent the need for expensive new hires.

The Growth Hub began to make introductions to key contacts within its network of strategic partners, including Enterprise Europe Network (EEN), UKTIGrowthAccelerator and the University of Gloucestershire. Each strategic partner delivered a key element of the company’s strategic plan.

The GrowthAccelerator part-funded leadership training including a Chartered Institute of Marketing (CIM) Diploma in Marketing; with the aim of developing the leadership team to better focus the business on customers rather than products. EEN also helped Bridge Worx with Entrepreneurial Skills Training, specifically small business marketing, finance and growth.

“We wouldn’t have got in contact with these groups without the Growth Hub” explained Daniel Bridges, Head of Marketing for Bridge Worx, “The Growth Hub have these existing relationships that are instrumental. Rather than sending an email or cold calling, it meant we could have a sit down meeting straight away. Our Business Guide was able to speed us through the hoops by articulating our business challenges.”

During this time, The Growth Hub helped Bridge Worx acquire finance from the University of Gloucestershire's SEED programme, a scheme funded by the Regional Growth Fund. “There was an internal project that we’d been looking at for some time, but because of the size of team and resource being an issue we’d struggled to finance it. We applied, went through the selection panel and were lucky enough to be awarded £142,000; which is life-saving and will make a massive difference to our business. We initially believed we’d probably get another 16 jobs now it looks like that might actually be 22 jobs over the course of the next three years.”

Bridge Worx is currently finalising applications for further finance to continue expanding the business. The Growth Hub, along with GFirst LEP, organised a Dragon’s Den style panel of financiers and industry experts who helped Bridge Worx to hone their pitch and to identify alternative methods of funding.  “That’s amazing” continues Daniel, “not something we’d get anywhere else. It means I can go up, practice my pitch and get some feedback from these guys, before we do it for real.”

The next big step is the Mobile World Congress, a huge telecommunications and mobile industry expo. “Hundreds of thousands of people attend each year. To give you an idea of the scale, Facebook founder Mark Zuckerberg usually presents. It’s in Barcelona and is really expensive to attend. All of our customers are going to be there but we’d resigned ourselves to not being able to afford a spot this year. But through contacts that The Growth Hub introduced us to within EEN and UKTI, we’ve managed to secure a ticket and help with travel costs. We’ll have the chance to rub shoulders with giants and make a real difference to our business…”
